Contrary to the orthodox way of capturing the torii gate at Shimogamo Shrine, in which we can see the Romon gate beyond the Ni-no-torii (second torii gate), William took this unique image of the same torii gate from the opposite side—as if to look back at the gate on one’s way back home from visiting the main shrine. The contrast of the vermillion torii with white gravel is softened by the dark greens of the surrounding forest (Tadasu-no-mori). In this dynamic yet simple composition we feel a dignified atmosphere.
