Instead of the popular facing view of Byodo-in, William chose an angle that enables us to discover the Phoenix Hall in the distance on the other side of the pond. The beautiful interplay of light and shadow on the trunk of the tree occupies the center of the composition; the tree’s branches spread upwards and outwards. Behind it are vivid red azaleas and the calm reflection of the heavenly Phoenix Hall.
