Due to meticulous trimming, the roundness of each bush in the middle ground is emphasized. This in turn, makes the triangular shape of the thatched roof of Basho’s hut stand out. This composition may remind us of the Yin and Yang symbol where two contrasting aspects contain elements of the other. The upper half of this composition is filled with dark green foliage, while the lower half is filled with white gravel. Yet the gravel has small patches of green moss growing in it while the upper half of the picture contains a patch of light sky and spots of bright lichen on the trunk of a tree. This image simple yet dignified.
