This image shows one of the pair of two guardians (Nio) that stand on each side of the Ninna-ji temple gate. These muscular and intimidating deities, which are often found at the entrances of temples, guard sacred Buddhist beliefs and values from evil. Of the two, this one is called Agyo Rikishi or Misshaku Rikishi, and his mouth is open to form the “Ah” or “Aum” sound in order to ward off the demons. The vertical 8×20 format allows us to take in the intensity of this larger-than-life figure behind the rhythmically placed wooden fence. William had to wait two months for the proper conditions to capture this image; strong winds often thwarted his attempts to photograph these statues. He said he had to learn to be very humble each time he went.
