This is the second of the Nio guardians—Ungyo or Naraen Kongo Rikishi—and his mouth is closed, representing the sound (or non-sound) “ng” or “Hum.” While Agyo Rikishi represents the manifestation of Dainichi Nyorai (the main deity of Esoteric Buddhism), this one is said to represent the manifestation of Vishnu, the Hindu deity of preservation. William thought one had to communicate with and honor the subject before taking a photograph.
