Hakuryu-en was not open to the public back then. When William found this private garden by chance, it was a “love at first sight.” So he asked permission from its owner to make photographs of the premises. Even though the owner couldn’t speak a word of English, he welcomed William and invited him to take as many pictures of the garden anytime he wished. A wooden bench in open air in this image beckons us to sit down and be at peace with life and nature. The entire garden was created as a sacred work of art.
