William loved being in Shimogamo Shrine and photographing its bridge. He considered himself as a cultural bridge between the US and Japan through a deep understanding of two different art forms: Japanese gardens and photography. In this image, we see the Sorihashi Bridge above the Mitarashi (purification) River, connecting the two shores. William once said, “Water and bridge represent the flow of time, the movements of arriving and departing, of coming into existence and passing out of it.”
