Sanzen-in: The Yusei-en Garden (C-152)

From the The Gardens of Kyoto collection.

Sanzen-in was one of William’s favorite temples, and he visited it many times over the years to master the composition of its garden. This image was initially inspired by the single yellow leaf visible at a foot of the tree in the foreground… and then, in William’s words, “the drama started!” The main temple building is quietly assimilated into the surrounding trees and their splendid autumn colors.
