<< Return to The Gardens of Yamagata

Yamagata, Japan

In the spring of 1995, William was invited as ‘artist in residence’ to the Tohoku University of Art & Design in Yamagata City. There are around 1,500 Somei Yoshino – cherry trees planted in the premise. Kajo Koen/Park is located near Yamagata station and within the site of Yamagata Castle. The castle is said to have been built by Shiba (Mogami) Kaneyori / 斯波(最上)兼頼in 1357 A.D. I still have the vivid memory of walking this beautiful pathway with William. It was breathtaking! …a lot of beautiful memories! “I place my camera bag and tripod on a grassy mound and turn and begin pacing, slowly back and forth, along the narrowed path. I feel excited, and as always when I begin working, a little tentative. It is like being confronted with a massive jig-saw puzzle, a thousand pieces to contend with. My eyes search the landcape with a heightened awareness, and I seem to slip into an instinctive automation, something like a finely calibrated machine. Bit by bit, each minute detail begins to take on a life of it’s own. I kneel down and strain to ‘compose’ where each piece will fit into the puzzle.”
