Hakuryuen is not open to the public. “I knew when a moment was rare, when it was so good that you would carry it inside you forever. From the moment I passed through the screens into the garden nothing was real, and everything that was in it was better than I had hoped for. The seeming timelessness was part of it. Dropped out of nowhere into this still beauty, one couldn’t have known it wasn’t 1905–or even 1705–except for the electric and telephone lines harsh against the sky.”
