Honen-In was originally established as a hut during the early part of Kamakura-era (鎌倉時代) It is named after the Buddhist monk, Honen who had established the Jodo-sect. Jodo-sect was considered heretic, so Honen was exiled and after Honen’s death, the hut was dilapidated. During the Edo-era, it was re-established/founded by the 38th abbot of Chionin Temple.
